The Space Shuttle was the only project funded under the 1969 Recoverable Spacecraft Program and is the centerpiece of the U.S. Space Shuttle program [4]. The shuttle underwent four orbital test flights, the first of which took place in 1981 and became operational in 1982. The United States has built five complete Space shuttle orbiters and flown 135 missions over three decades, each taking off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. In addition to launching the Hubble Space Telescope, satellites and space probes, the missions also completed orbital science experiments and participated in the construction and maintenance of the International Space Station. The combined duration of all shuttle missions was 1,322 days, 19 hours, 21 minutes and 23 seconds.
