.Background Story: The Los Angeles class submarines, also known as 688 class, are nuclear-powered fast attack submarines (SSNs) serving in the US Navy. With a total of 62 submarines constructed from 1972 to 1996, and additional 23 built to the improved 688i standard, they remain a formidable force with 24 still in active service as of 2024, comprising nearly half of the US Navy’s fleet of fast attack submarines. These submarines are named after US cities, diverging from the tradition of naming attack submarines after marine animals. Notable exceptions include the USS Hyman G.
