Background Introduction:
TheJAS 39 Gripen (IPA: [ˈɡrǐːpɛn] pronunciationⓘ; English: Griffin) is a light single-engine supersonic multi-role fighter developed by Sweden. The Gripen adopts a delta wing and canard layout, with a low stability design and fly-by-wire flight control system. Later model aircraft are fully interoperable with NATO. As of 2020, more than 271 Gripens of all models from A to F have been delivered.
In 1979, the Swedish government began to study a “combat, attack and reconnaissance aircraft” (JAS for short) to replace the Swedish Air Force’s Saab 35 “Dragon” and 37 “Venger” types. Saab’s new design was selected and developed into the JAS 39. The aircraft made its first flight in 1988 and the first production aircraft was delivered in 1993. The aircraft entered service with the Swedish Air Force in 1996. An upgraded version, equipped with more advanced avionics and longer mission time, entered service in 2003.
To promote the aircraft internationally, Saab has established partnerships with overseas aerospace companies and has launched a number of collaborations. In the export market, early models of the Gripen achieved some success and were sold to countries such as Central Europe, South Africa and Southeast Asia. Bribery was suspected in some of the procurement projects, but Swedish authorities closed the investigation in 2009.
The significantly redesigned Gripen series of fighters, previously known as Gripen NG (Next Generation) or Super JAS, is now designated the JAS 39E/F Gripen and began deliveries to the Swedish Air Force and the Brazilian Air Force in 2019. Changes from the JAS C to the JAS E include a larger airframe, more powerful engines, a higher weapons payload capacity, as well as a new cockpit, avionics architecture, electronic warfare system and other improvements.
