Background Introduction:
The CH-47 Chinook is a twin-rotor helicopter. The Chinook is a heavy transport helicopter and one of the helicopters with the largest load capacity in the West. The name “Chinook” comes from the Chinook people, a Native American people in Oregon and Washington states.
Chinook began developing a new twin-rotor helicopter in 1957, named V-107. Around the same time, the U.S. Army announced plans to replace the CH-37 Mojave helicopter with a new gas turbine helicopter that would use a piston engine.
In June 1958, the U.S. Army ordered a small number of V-107 helicopters from Vitol as the YHC-1A; after testing, some Army officials concluded that the helicopter was too heavy for assault missions and too light for transport. The YHC-1A was modified and adopted by the U.S. Marine Corps as the CH-46 Sea Knight, while the Army sought a heavier transport helicopter and ordered an enlarged derivative of the V-107, designated the Vertol Model 114. Originally designated the YCH-1B, the pre-production rotorcraft made its maiden flight on September 21, 1961, and in 1962 the HC-1B was redesignated the CH-47A under the 1962 U.S. Tri-Service Aircraft Designation System.
Commissioned in 1962, the helicopter could reach a speed of 170 knots (200 mph; 310 km/h), much faster than its 1960s utility and attack helicopter contemporaries, and remains one of the fastest helicopters in the U.S. inventory. Improved and more powerful versions of the Chinook have also been introduced since its introduction; one of the most significant variants produced is the CH-47D, which first entered service in 1982; standard CH-47C improvements include upgraded engines, composite rotor blades, a redesigned cockpit to reduce workloads, improved and redundant electrical systems and avionics, and the introduction of advanced flight control system.
Military versions of the helicopter have been exported worldwide; the U.S. Army and the Royal Air Force (see Boeing Chinook (UK version)) are its two largest users. “The civilian version of the Chinook is the Vertol 234, which is used by civilian operators not only for passenger and cargo transportation, but also for aerial firefighting and to support the logging, construction and oil extraction industries.
