SR-72 “Dark Star”, maverick, looks like a Mach 10 monster. Although it has never been realized in reality, prominent American arms companies have recently announced major successes with hypersonic propulsion systems of the kind used by the Dark Star aircraft, making descriptions of Mach 10 aircraft seem less like science fiction and more like a glimpse into the near future. It uses a dual-cycle jet propulsion system that is capable of pushing larger payloads over longer distances than existing systems, while taking off and landing like any other aircraft. The Air Force contract document does not say what it means by “existing systems.” Jet aircraft, or supersonic ramjets, are not exactly new technology – they have been tested for decades, but so far no country has successfully fitted a practical air-breathing scramjet engine to a missile or aircraft. These engines work by using the immense force of air flowing into the vent at supersonic speeds and higher to compress the air inside the engine, which is then mixed with fuel and detonated from behind to gain propulsion.
