.Background: Barad-dûr was the Dark Lord Sauron’s central stronghold in Mordor, serving as his base of operations in Middle-earth during the Second Age and late Third Age. Barad-dûr was held together by dark magic and was the greatest fortress in Middle-earth of its time. It was originally built in the Second Age, and leveled after Sauron’s defeat in the War of the Last Alliance. Sauron had Barad-dûr rebuilt late in the Third Age as he regained his power, but the tower was forever destroyed immediately upon the destruction of the One Ring.

This huge fortress was built by Sauron in the land of Mordor, not far from the volcano known as Mount Doom. The construction of the tower took six hundred years to complete. It was the greatest fortress built since the fall of Angband during the War of Wrath. Barad-dûr was besieged for seven years by the Last Alliance of Elves and Men during the Second Age, and was leveled after Sauron’s defeat at the hands of Isildur. But because it was created using the power of the One Ring, its foundations could not be destroyed while the Ring itself still existed. As Isildur failed to destroy the Ring, the tower was eventually re-built when Sauron returned to Mordor thousands of years later . Some time near the end of the Third Age, Gollum was captured and taken to Barad-dûr, while Gandalf and Aragorn were also searching for him. He was tortured for information regarding the whereabouts of the One Ring, as Sauron had learned that he had once possessed it, and thus Sauron learned that the One Ring had been found. Satisfied that he had learned all he could from the creature, Sauron allowed Gollum to be released.

The Bestial Sanctum might be the first location in Dragonbarrow that players encounter, as you’ll be teleported here after chatting with D, Hunter of the Dead, and taking the Waygate in East Limgrave.

You’ll find Gurranq, Beast Clergyman here—an NPC eternally hungry to devour death. You can give him Deathroot in exchange for different goods. Be careful after giving him the 4th Deathroot, as Gurranq will become hostile. You’ll need to deal a certain amount of damage to calm him down before being able to interact with him again.

Outside of the Bestial Sanctum is the field boss Black Blade Kindred, guarding the entrance to the refuge and defeating this boss when early in the game can prove challenging.

You can find the Dragoncrest Shield Talisman on the bottom level of the structure below the cliffs surrounding the Bestial Sanctum. You’ll need to jump down the big roots to the west of the bestial sanctum to make it down.

From there you’ll want to carefully make your way down the structures until you see some Vampire Bats and Sanctuary Stones scattered on the floor; you want to stay in this corner—hugging the cliffs as you jump down. Keep moving across the platform and pick up the Cinqueda from the beast’s corpse. Not far from here is the noble’s corpse holding the Dragoncrest Talisman.

From this crash-site, a community developed, and Mos Eisley grew in a radial formation from the burned out remains. In the decades of growth that followed, a water and power distribution plant became the new city center, and the dusty remains of the Dowager Queen are little more than a place for vagrants and crackpot preachers to convene.
