.Background: The XR-7755-3 is the largest and most powerful reciprocating aircraft engine in the world. During WWII, the United States requested an engine with high takeoff power and low fuel consumption for long-range bombers and transport aircraft that were yet to be designed. The engine’s design began in early 1944 and was ready for testing by mid-1946. It featured nine twin-blade overhead camshafts that could shift axially to enhance takeoff and cruising efficiency, as well as a two-speed, geared, dual-rotating propeller drive system. Originally intended for the “European bomber,” it ultimately became associated with the Convair B-36. The project was terminated in 1946, with only two engines ever produced. The last remaining engine is believed to be on display at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum.
.Design Details: The design consists of nine sets of four-cylinder engines, with each group arranged at a 40° angle relative to adjacent cylinders and placed around a central crankshaft, forming a four-row radial engine. Unlike most “spiral” multi-row radial engines that allow cooling air to flow between cylinders, the XR-7755 was water-cooled. Each cylinder head within the groups was aligned in a cooling jacket. Each cylinder group had an overhead camshaft to drive the lift valves. The camshaft contained two sets of cams—one for full takeoff power and the other for economical cruising.

.Notes: Contains small parts; handle and store carefully.
.Background: In 1936, Junkers engineer Dr. Johannes Gasterstädt designed an opposed-piston engine configuration capable of delivering 2,000 horsepower (1,490 kW) in a compact package suitable for aircraft use. This configuration consisted of four cylinder banks arranged at 90-degree angles to one another, forming a diamond shape. The pistons of two adjacent cylinder banks were connected to crankshafts located at each corner of the diamond. Each cylinder bank housed six cylinders, resulting in a complete engine with four crankshafts, 24 cylinders, and 48 pistons.
Junkers’diamond-configuration engine research was named P2000. Following Dr. Gasterstädt’s death in 1937, Professor Otto Mader and Manfred Gerlach took over the P2000 project. By the end of 1937, a single-cylinder test engine and a complete six-cylinder block had been manufactured and tested. In April 1938, the Reich Aviation Ministry (RLM) renamed the P2000 engine to Jumo 223. By December 1939, a full-size Jumo 223 engine was completed and underwent bench testing in January 1940.
.Design: The Jumo 223 stands as one of the most unconventional engines ever created. It featured two large and complex aluminum castings—one located at the front and the other at the rear of the engine. Each casting housed four sets of three-cylinder engines. A large central gear was located at the engine’s core, connecting the two castings.
Each crankshaft was composed of two main parts, bolted together through a central gear. The gears on each crankshaft meshed with the central gear, transmitting power to it. Drive shafts ran through the engine center, extending from the front and rear of the central gear. The rear shaft powered the engine’s blower (a mild supercharger) and auxiliary components through a series of gears. The front shaft connected to the propeller.

MOC-195745 205 6-Cylinder Opposed Piston Diesel Aviation Engine Building Blocks Set (237PCS)

Features:

.Model Description: Authorized and designed by WPNGLS, this model presents a shortened version of the engine, featuring only four cylinders. The model faithfully reproduces every detail of the original engine while ensuring a fun and engaging assembly process. It is highly collectible and visually appealing, making it a great addition for enthusiasts and collectors alike.
.Premium Parts: Includes 237 precision-engineered pieces with excellent fit and stability. Each piece is carefully cast and free from burrs or jagged edges, ensuring smooth surfaces and a scratch-free finish.
.Clear Instructions: Comes with a QR code instruction manual featuring detailed and easy-to-follow steps, ensuring a seamless building experience.
.Value and Significance: Once assembled, this building block model serves as an excellent display piece and decorative background. It helps improve hands-on skills and cognitive abilities, making it the perfect gift for beginners, collectors, aviation engine enthusiasts, and engine model fans alike.
.Notes: Contains small parts; handle and store carefully.
Background: This engine’s development began in the early 1930s. Known as the Junkers Jumo 204, it is a six-cylinder opposed piston diesel aircraft engine. The Jumo 205 was the most produced model in a series of aviation diesel engines manufactured by Junkers.
The Jumo 205 initially powered early versions of the Junkers Ju 86 bomber. However, it was found to be sluggish in combat response and prone to failure at maximum power, a common issue for engines in fighter aircraft. Later versions of this design were adapted for use in extremely high-altitude operations, such as the Ju 86P and Ju 86R variants, which were employed for high-altitude reconnaissance over the British Isles. In January 1940, the German Luftwaffe tested the Ju 86P prototype equipped with the turbocharged Jumo 207A-1 diesel engine. This engine proved to be more successful as a powerplant for airships, where its characteristics were well-suited. It was also used in non-combat applications, such as the Blohm & Voss Ha 139 passenger aircraft. Its fuel efficiency made it a viable choice for some of Germany’s limited seaplane designs during WWII, such as the BV 138 and BV 222 used for maritime patrols.
The Jumo 204 eventually evolved into the Jumo 208, though it did not see widespread use. Both the 204 and 205 were licensed to Napier, which produced several units under the name Napier Culverin. Napier later developed the Napier Deltic based on the same principles, using a triangular configuration of three Culverin units. This resulted in one of the most powerful and compact diesel engines of its time.
.Design: These engines employed a two-stroke cycle with 12 pistons sharing six cylinders in an opposed piston configuration. The pistons moved toward each other during operation. This unique design required two crankshafts: one at the bottom of the cylinder block and the other at the top, connected via gear drive.
In the working cycle, the intake ports were located at one end of the cylinder, while the exhaust ports were at the other. This allowed one piston to control the intake and the other to control the exhaust. Each cylinder was equipped with two cam-operated injection pumps, with each pump supplying fuel to two nozzles, for a total of four nozzles per cylinder.

.Background: Because European aircraft had greatly surpassed US designs, near the end of the 1930s, a number of aircraft manufacturers were asked for proposals of high performance aircraft, in an attempt to push the US industry forward. These aircraft would be powered by a so called Hyper Engine.
Originally, an inverted V-12 and variants of an H-24 were selected as Hyper engines, a year later 4 other engines were added to the program. One of these four was a 42-cylinder 7-bank engine, proposed by the Curtiss-Wright Corporation, called the Wright R-2160 Tornado.
The idea was to increase the amount of fuel turned into useful power each second, by increasing the engine speed. The effects of moving masses inside leads, among other things, reducing the piston weight and an as a result, the R-2160 is a relatively small engine, having a displacement of 2160 cubic inches. To have the propeller turn at optimal speeds, a reduction gear was used.
All of the Hyper engine programs were can celled eventually and, ironically, engines that were not considered under the program, like the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp and Wright R-3350 Duplex-Cyclone, both 18-cylinder 2-bank engines and the Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major, a 28-cylinder 4-bank, all surpassed the requirements and were built in large numbers. These motors are shown in MOC’s 159400 and 154089; this MOC is a model of a 42 cylinder radial engine.

    Successor: GM LS-based small-block engine
History: The Chevrolet small-block engine is a series of gasoline-powered V8 automobile engines produced by the Chevrolet division of General Motors from 1954 to 2003, utilizing the same fundamental engine block design throughout. Named “small-block” due to its relatively smaller size compared to the Chevrolet big-block engines, the design was led by engineer Ed Cole, who was praised for his contribution to its development. The engine blocks and cylinder heads were cast at the Saginaw Metal Casting plant in Saginaw, Michigan.
The first generation of Chevrolet’s small-block engine began with the Chevrolet V8 engine in 1955, initially found in the Corvette and Bel Air models. This engine quickly gained popularity among racers, earning the nickname “Mighty Mouse” after a popular cartoon character of the time, later shortened to simply “Mouse.” It offered optional Rochester mechanical fuel injection and a high-lift Duntov camshaft. From 1954 to 1974, the small-block engine was known as the “Turbo-Fire” or “High Torque” V8. Equipped with a spiral supercharger, it was widely used in everything from station wagons and sports cars to commercial vehicles, boats, industrial equipment, and even (in highly modified forms) airplanes. This versatility made it one of the most widely used small engines of all time.
The combination of its compact size, low cost, and dependable durability has made it a favorite in the global tuning community, with a nearly universal appeal. Over the years, the engine has undergone some extensive changes, resulting in more than 17 variations. One defining characteristic of Chevrolet engines, however, has been their interchangeability. Many parts, such as connecting rods, pistons, and other internal components, can be used across nearly any 350 engine, allowing newer pistons and rods to be added with minimal hassle.
