The Type 99 Main Battle Tank or ZTZ – 99 is a third generation Chinese main battle tank (MBT). [The vehicle was introduced in the late 1980s as a replacement for the aging Type 88 tank. The Type 99 is China’s first mass-produced third generation MBT. Combining modular composite armor and tandem charge explosion-proof armor, a 125mm smoothbore gun capable of firing anti-tank missiles, high mobility, digital systems and optical systems, the Type 99 represents the PLA’s move towards rapid modernization.
The Type 99 MBT is based on the Soviet T-72 chassis. The tank entered service with the People’s Liberation Army in 2001. The People’s Liberation Army is the only user of the Type 99 MBT. Three main variants of the Type 99 MBT have been put into service: the Type 98 prototype, the Type 99 and the Type 99A. The Type 99 MBT is the core of China’s modern mobile combat capability, with more than 1,200 tanks built over the past two decades.
