.Background: The Series 406 ICE high-speed trains of the Deutsche Bahn, from the ICE 3 family, are referred to as the multi-system capable variant of the Series 403. A total of seventeen units were built. The ICE trains, including three from the Dutch Railways, mainly run to Amsterdam and Brussels, but since the conversion of the ICE line to France to Series 407, they are increasingly used within Germany. Each 200.84 meters long, these trainsets consist of eight carriages and have been in passenger service since 2000. With an authorized maximum speed of 330 km/h, they are, along with the Series 403 trains, the fastest passenger trains in Germany. In operation, these electric multiple units regularly reach up to 300 km/h in Germany. During the deployment of trainsets 4680–4685 on the LGV Est européenne, they achieved speeds of up to 320 km/h as planned. Powering is provided through the onboard restaurant. The carriages can be coupled using a four-arm lift or an old magnetic coupling.
