Product Background:
The EMD SD40-2 was manufactured by EMD from 1972 to 1989 as part of EMD’s Dash 2 series. Despite the availability of higher horsepower locomotives at the time, the SD40-2’s reliability and versatility made it one of EMD’s best-selling models, second only to the GP9. It remained the industry standard for decades after its introduction. The SD40-2 is an improved version of the SD40.
The SD40-2 has seen service in Canada, Mexico, Brazil, and Guinea. To meet the specifications of export countries, custom versions were designed, such as the JT26CW-SS for the UK (British Rail Class 59), the GT26CW-2 for Yugoslavia, South Korea, Iran, Morocco, Peru, and Pakistan, and the GT26CU-2 for Zimbabwe and Brazil. Algeria received a custom version known as the GT26HCW-2.
