.Model of a Roman Basilica.
Basilica was originally the name of large, magnificent buildings intended for court sessions and commercial transactions (e.g. as a market hall).
In the course of Christianisation and the establishment of Christianity, the term was soon applied to church buildings modelled on ancient basilicas, particularly those from the Romanesque period. In art and architectural terminology, the term basilica is only used for elongated buildings with a high central nave and low side aisles, corresponding to the early Christian building form.
